FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Minnesota Twins first full-squad workout is in the books. The team, new pieces and all, hit the field together on Saturday.

They will play in their first spring training game is against the Red Sox on Friday.

One of the reasons this team is optimistic despite having suffered three consecutive losing seasons are the improvements they've made to the pitching staff.

Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes are hoping to bolster a starting staff that has struggled for several years.

At one time in his career, Hughes was one of the hottest prospects with the New York Yankees, but he was horribly inconsistent last year.

"It's a perfect opportunity to come into spring training, new uniform, and new team and just forget about the disaster of last year," Hughes said.

The Twins and their fans are hoping that Hughes will get that spark back.

"Sometimes you hit that point in your career where, you need (a fresh start)," said Hughes. "Especially with the way last year went, I just needed that fresh start, that clean slate."
